Soundproof Walls

What is the best way to soundproof a room?

We have a room in our house that shares a wall with a bathroom. Whenever someone uses the bathroom, it's actually hard to talk in the other room because the running water is so loud between the rooms. How can we make this room (or at least this wall) soundproof? We are willing to do minor construction on the walls.

  1. Go to a good drapery store and ask about sound-reducing wall coverings. The other option is to construct a suspended wall just in front of the shared wall, and that would dampen the sound waves coming from the shared wall. Check with a building contractor about that. Altering the shared wall itself is going to be less effective than either of these two methods.
  2. Curtains and rugs. Roxanne
