What sound proofing options do I have?
I'm putting up a stud wall to split a large bedroom into two smaller rooms. I want to use a stud wall but with improved sound proofing. What options do I have to shove in between the plasterboard?

- Earplugs.
- Cheep foam material, insulation is never a bad thing. Maybe some old comforters if you are desperate.
- ordinary insulation batts or foam
- I used insulation and 5/8 drywall.
- my dad did the same thing with my brothers room a while back. He used plaster boared as well. Put installation between the walls. It works pretty good. I cant hear much of whats going on outside of his room. you can get it at any Lowes or Home Depot.
- There is a correct specification in accordance with UK building regulations, that is minimum 50mm thick mineral wool fibre sheets, you could always double up and use 100mm in a 100mm thick wall. If you think that this would still present a problem incorporate a wardrobe within the room divide, there is nothing better than 600mm of clothes on hangers to stop sound transfer. When I design a house that has timber stud partitions at first floor bedroom level I always incorporate wardrobes.
- An excellent sound-proofer is saw dust between the layers but don't tell the fire-chief.

- Styrofoam actually works incredibly well. It's cheap too! idk how you could get it in there....i dont think they make sheets of the stuff. lol i'm sure you can figure that out though.
- you can get accoustic plasterboard,(plasterboard with foam on the back)but i would knock up your frame and fill it with glass wool,(cheaper option at this time of year as b&q will be selling it off cheap),or you use 70mm Kingspan themal sheets.
- I had the same question and was told styrofoam is excellent.
