Soundproof Walls

Should I use thicker or thinner insulation for sound proofing?

I am insulating a basement ceiling. My main concern is sound proofing. I am using a drop ceiling. The ceiling beams are 8 inches. Is it better to shove 10 " worth of insulation into the ceiling or use a thinner, 3" insulation.

  1. The more the better........you could go with a sound board, if you are dropping the ceilings........but the cost and labor might not be worth it...just get some good stuff 6'' insulation and I think that would be your easiest and cheapest.
  2. The thicker and denser, the better it will be.
  3. The sound is repelled or absorbed by the roughness of the surface. As you are doing a dropped celling check with your supplier what is available. They can be a great help as to how many decibels will be dispersed. I have seen anything from egg cartons to cork. Most likely you will end up with fiber glass and a sheet of white polypropylene with a crinkle finish.
  4. The more the better. Also think about adding it to interior walls to lessen noise between areas.
