Soundproof Walls

What does an impulse response tell you about the acoustics of the room?

I want to measure Reverberation time in a concert hall or a church but I am not sure which method to use. And I have been reading up on MLS and Sine Sweep Tests and I am not sure if I need to do them too.

  1. Time impulse response is the natural response of any system. In your case of "reverberation", it is essentially the time the sound "dwells" in a particular room which can only be tested if you measure the time response of sound at a particular point when you make a short but relatively loud noise (like a clap). Sine Sweep Test is a different story. There you want to map out the frequency response to figure out the attenuation of different sound tones. A sine sweep will not tell you about reverberation.
